Your Mind-Body Coaches

Michelle is a life coach and poet who found her creative voice and mind-body coaching after recovering from decades of chronic pain, fibromyalgia, chronic fatigue, POTS, and Ehler’s Danlos Syndrome pain. Through Dr. Howard Schubiner’s teachings, she healed her TMS and uses mind-body science to help clients discover the truth inside of their symptoms. She loves helping clients get their lives back! Michelle is committed to creating healing communities through her online group courses and is thrilled to be collaborating with Rebecca Tolin in How We Heal.

Rebecca is a certified mind-body coach who helps people recover their wellbeing and spirit. She healed from a debilitating 13-year bout with Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, as well as fibromyalgia and interstitial cystitis, through the work of Dr. John Sarno and mind-body pioneers. Rebecca now coaches, teaches and writes about how to heal from stress-related symptoms, including chronic pain, fatigue, headaches, anxiety and insomnia. Her approach blends neuroscience, somatic practices, emotional processing, thought work and behavioral changes. Rebecca loves guiding people back to their personal power and self-love.


Class Sessions

1. Science

The brain creates all pain and fatigue, whether there’s physical injury or psychological stress. We dive into Sarno, Schubiner and other greats in the field of mind-body medicine. Discover how repressed emotions, trauma and habitual thought patterns keep you locked in a cycle of symptoms—and ultimately how to rewire your brain and create healthier patterns.

2. Story

How do I know if my symptoms are mind-body? Once your physician has ruled out a serious illness, we teach you how to gather evidence of stress-induced symptoms through detailed questionnaires, writing prompts and discussion. Explore your personal story, personality and emotional outlook when the symptoms began.

3. Mind

Our brains can become stuck in a heightened state of alert, even after a threat has passed. We’ll lower fear using affirmations, writing, imagination and other mind-body tools. Become mindful of thoughts that trigger your symptoms, as well as learned associations. We use our conscious mind to instill safety in the brain.

4. Body

Trauma and repressed emotions are stored in the body. Feeling them is transformative. We work with physical and emotional sensations through somatic tracking, memory, breath and other meditations. This deep work helps regulate our nervous system and bring us into a more embodied experience of life.

5. Self

Our personality traits and self-talk impact our nervous system and our symptoms. Shift out of being a victim to a co-creator of your life! Self-empowerment and self-compassion are potent healers. We’ll look at ways we unknowingly illicit symptoms through self-pressure and learn ways to accept and calm ourselves.  

6. Life

You’ve embraced your emotions and shifted thought patterns. It’s time to return to activities you enjoy! We do this in steps with indifference to symptoms, which teaches the brain it’s safe to do what we want. Discover the healing power of play and purpose. Learn to follow your intuition and do what lights you up.

HOW DO I KNOW IF I’M READY FOR THIS COURSE?

  • Your physician has ruled out major diseases or structural causes, such as bone disease, infection, fractures or cancer. We are not doctors and cannot diagnose you. It’s essential that you see your medical professional to evaluate your symptoms prior to this class.
  • Your symptoms haven’t improved by treatments suggested by your medical professionals.
  • You’re open to exploring emotional and physical sensations in your body as a pathway to healing.
  • You want to work with thoughts to retrain your brain.
  • You yearn to grow in a supportive community.

WHAT SYMPTOMS RESPOND TO MIND-BODY WORK? Assuming there’s no major structural or pathological issue, How We Heal can help with chronic back, neck or shoulder pain, chronic fatigue, migraines, fibromyalgia, CRPS, POTS, irritable bowel and bladder, pelvic pain, TMJ, repetitive stress injuries, hypersensitivity syndromes, anxiety, insomnia and other stress-related conditions. WHAT IF MY MEDICAL IMAGING SHOWS THINGS LIKE BULGING DISKS? Medical imaging is helpful to rule out serious injuries or conditions. But studies show that people without pain have changes in their scans, what Dr. John Sarno called normal abnormalities. For instance, 48% of healthy adults in their early twenties have at least one degenerative disc and 25% have a bulging disc. Up to 85% of adults with no knee pain have arthritis in their knees. Similarly, half of people 60 and older without shoulder pain have rotator cuff tears on their MRIs. These normal structural changes are not usually causing the pain. Rather, the brain is causing the pain and we can retrain it.

HOW COULD MY BRAIN BE CAUSING PAIN OR FATIGUE? THE SYMPTOMS FEEL SO REAL. The pain or fatigue are 100% real and you feel them in the body. But we know that stress-related symptoms are generated by the brain. When our nervous system gets activated, our brain goes into protective mode on our behalf creating symptoms in the body, causing pain, fatigue, tingling, burning, headaches, anxiety, insomnia and more.

WHAT’S YOUR REFUND POLICY? This work can bring up challenging emotions, sensations and thoughts but we encourage you to stick with it! Healing happens by moving through obstacles with consistent practice. HOW LONG CAN I ACCESS THE COURSE WEBSITE? You’ll have one year from the start of your course date to access the How We Heal class website and all course content. You can rewatch class videos during that year, plus download all audio meditations and handouts to keep.

WHY SHOULD I TAKE A GROUP CLASS INSTEAD OF 1:1 COACHING OR THERAPY? Together we will harness the power of a safe and supportive community! Not only will you be guided by two caring life coaches, you’ll learn from your peers. You don’t have to go it alone! This course will give you a strong education on Mind-Body Syndrome (MBS), Tension Myoneural Syndrome (TMS) and psychophysiologic pain (PPD), as well as provide somatic meditations and resources for your home practice. It’s a foundational course, whether you’re new to mind-body work or stuck in your TMS journey. Plus, this group course is much more affordable than 1:1 coaching.
